Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Drew Barrett. Originally from Michigan, I attended college at Bob Jones University studying Accounting. I graduated in 2018 and started my career with the SC Office of the State Auditor in Columbia, SC. I worked as an Auditor for 4 years before relocating to Greenville, SC to work as an Accounting and Finance Recruiter.

About the same time I started my career I got connected with a team of entrepreneurs in Greenville who helped me launch an ecommerce business which I have been building outside of my full time work for 7 years. I am married with one daughter.

What did it take/how did you get started?

I always knew the 9/5 grind wasn’t the answer for me. I had a lot of big dreams and goals and a lot of impact I wanted to make on my community and the world. I just didn’t see that in the path I was on. When I was approached with an opportunity to start an Ecommerce business it really just made sense.

It provided the opportunity for me to create an uncapped income for my family without me sacrificing all my time. It was something we could build together as a family while still working full time and being involved in church and the community. I knew it would be easy though. It would take hard work, intense focus, and overcoming people’s opinions and misconceptions. But to me, a life of purpose and impact is worth overcoming for.

What does the future look like for you and your business?

The future looks bright. With Ecommerce being one of the fastest growing industries the opportunities are endless. More and more people are shopping online and since the companies we work for tend to be in the health and wellness industry we have an almost unlimited market. Our business has already allowed my wife to fulfill her dream of being a full time mom and we are excited for what additional options it will continue to create in our lives.

What drives / motivates you on a daily basis?

  1. Being the best I can be at whatever I decide to do
  2. Adding value to everyone I come across
  3. Empowering people around me to overcome and fulfill their dreams and goals
  4. Creating the best example of winning for my family and future generations.

What advice would you give someone interested in doing what you do?

  1. Find a coach. Having someone in your corner who has been there and done that is invaluable and will save you so much time and energy.
  2. Don’t listen to people who do not have what you want in life. Even if it is your closest friends, family, or coworkers.
  3. Be patient. Your business might not explode over night. E-commerce is not a ticket to getting rich fast. Like any business you have to stay consistent and celebrate the steady progression. Most people give up to early and never see the results from their work.

What has been the hardest part of your business journey?

For me it was overcoming peoples objections and misunderstandings. I chose an alternate route that was against the norm and a lot of people I knew did not like that. Nothing against them but they did it understand what it was I was trying to accomplish. Their average goals were exposed by me talking about what I was building.

I had to make sure I was listening to and associating with people who were going in the same direction as me rather than those who wanted to stay where they were at. The other thing that was challenging was staying consistent. Our business is built through daily consistent activity. Like working out you won’t see major results after one big workout. You have to stay steady with the work and eventually the results will be there.

How have you managed burnout thus far?

I keep my goals in front of me. When I remember why I do what I do, I know I am working for a purpose and for me that keeps me going. I also prioritized building the business with my family whenever possible to make sure we still spend a lot of quality time together.
